Why does my email inbox keep getting full?

Another question we get asked a lot here at Digital Developments is from clients who have setup their email address up on their email client/program (whether it be Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail etc) and keep having their own clients tell them their emails to them are bouncing back. This will generally be because the email account is full.

We then get the question:

If my emails are downloaded to Outlook (or the like) why is my account getting full?

Yes, your email program downloads your emails, but it only downloads a copy. All your emails are sent to and stored on a server and then your email program connects to the server to check for new mail. By default, any email you receive will stay on the server allowing it to fill up.

The advantage of this is that you can setup the same email address on multiple devices and receive the same emails on each of them.

However, to prevent your mail box from filling up you can instruct your email program to automatically delete emails after a certain amount of days. This gives time for your devices to receive the emails but keeps your mailbox clutter free.

How do I automatically remove emails from my account after a certain number of days?

This can easily be done from your email program. As there is a large number of different email programs that can be used, we will post these tutorials in different articles. Please select your email program below for a full walkthrough.
